“Domino”, painted in in 1957-58 was carried out in gouache on Arches paper. Typically, artists will begin a watercolor painting with a graphite, (black line) drawing followed by washes of color. Roger wanted to reverse that process by starting with a wonderfully fluid and confident watercolor line, then painting the spaces with gray and black leaving saved paper for the lights. This produced a singular and dramatic take on still life and standard painting practice. The objects were selected for intrinsic visual characteristics from ephemera Roger collected over the years.
